The Bean Trees

 December 4th:
I'd had a pretty hard life, but I keep finding out that life can be hard in ways I never even thought about"

Author's Note: In this writing prompt for The Bean Trees, I wanted to explain how a quote in the book related to the theme. In my earlier writing prompts, I have explained what the theme was, and it still is "A Journey of a Hero". Also, in this piece I wanted to work on my introduction. I'd like to have a strong introduction with fictional narrative.

I was driving through all of the different states to Oklahoma. Turtle, Estevan, and Esperanza sat in the car with me making sure I didn't get too tired from driving. We finally passed the border and were on our way. Every now and then I would see the Cherokee people by a lake or driving a car. Turtle yelled "Mama" every once and a while, and when she did my head turned as fast as a lightning bolt to see who she screamed at. No one was ever there. As I sat in the driver’s seat, I thought that I've had a pretty hard life, but I keep finding out that life can be hard in ways I never even thought about.

The novel, The Bean Trees, Taylor has been through a lot. She has a new child that she cares about deeply that she thinks she won't be able to keep. Just that proves that she has been having a hard time. She thought that she actually has had a hard life, but she kept finding out that life can be hard in ways that she never even thought about. Taylor is a hero, and that quote proves that even though she is having a hard time, she makes a journey every step of the way.

A hero is someone who helps you along the way. If you are in trouble or hurt, they will always protect you. Taylor and many other characters in the book are heroes. They all have their own stories and problems that they face, but they never stop moving. A hero will never give up on what they are doing. The quote "I've had a pretty hard life, but I keep finding out that life can be hard in ways I never even thought about." explains the journey of a hero.

November 13:  "It's the cycle of life"
Author's Note: In this piece, I wanted to recognize how a quote from the book has something to do with the book itself. The quote that I will be talking about is "It's the cycle of life". Also, in this piece I want to work on telling the truth throughout the writing prompt. In my earlier writing prompts, I haven't agreed with what I was talking about, and I want that to change.

I drive in my old, decayed car going from house to house. People are friendly as I look for a room for Turtle and I, although I haven't found what I am looking for yet. As I walk up to the door, and talk to the lady, I notice how she has a new baby and that she needs a friend. Finally I move in where every day she teaches me life lessons, and something she said to me was "It's the cycle of life". I realized that everything in my life was a cycle. I cycle of something new.

In the novel, The Bean Trees , Taylor and Lou Ann had a great relationship. When someone was feeling down, they would always make each other feel better. For example, when Angel, Lou Ann's ex-husband, told her that she would soon receive the divorce papers, all she did was cry. Although, that was all just part of the cycle. She needed to keep going with her life and try to find someone else to love.

When Lou Ann or Taylor have troubles, they always come to each other. They always hope and wish that they hear the best from one another. That is a sacred ground that nobody can touch but themselves. When Taylor needs help with Turtle, Lou Ann is always there with the answers. The answers explain the cycle that they go through. Which then explains the cycle of life.

 November 1
Author's Note: In this writing prompt about The Bean TreesI was writing about the different relationships between Mattie and Taylor. Taylor is one of the main characters of the book who meets Mattie from her journey in Tuscon, Arizona. They both taught each other important lessons from being with each other. In this piece, I would like to work on having a good conclusion, and making it seem like I am not trying to wrap it up.

As Taylor arrived in Tuscon, she felt like the new girl. No one really seemed to talk to her except for maybe a waitress in a restaurant.  Not only that, she has a new baby that she barely knew because some stranger dropped it into her car. Although Taylor didn't know anybody in this new city, she did have a chance to talk to someone different. Someone that owned the tire shop Jesus.Is.The.Lord.Tires.

Mattie, this new friend of Taylor's, helped her along the way with all of her journey's. One being how to take care of this new baby, Turtle. As she fed Turtle, they would talk about what each other is like and where they came from. However, it goes far back of how these two met.

As Taylor was driving down the streets of Tuscon, she found this tire shop. Now, the tires on Taylor's car weren't the best. They were worn out and had holes in them, and it would've been smart for her to stop at a tire shop before. Although, if she did, she wouldn't have met this person. As she stopped at the tire shop, Mattie was there and helped her with these tires that she had problems with.

In the novel, The Bean Trees, Mattie and Taylor didn't seem very close. They met once to be exact and that was only to help fix tires on a car. Although they may have their differences, they are friends. One of Taylor's only friends that helps her along the way of her new journey.

 October 30
Author's Note: In the middle of the month of October, my friend and I started to read the book The Bean Trees. Something that really stuck out to me was how the theme really stuck out. The theme that I have noticed was a journey of a hero, and that is was I based this piece on.  Also, in this prompt I wanted to work on the sentence fluency, and making sure I use different sentence varieties with what I am saying.

When Missy walks out of the bar into the streets, she realizes something. Her car was not parked on a hill, not even near one to be exact. She finally opens the door and pushed, pushed as hard as she could, making sure that it wouldn't stop.  Once the car started to move, she put the key in the ignition. It moved faster as she placed her foot onto the exhilaration. That just proves the theme of the story, a journey of a hero.

If you have ever read the novel, The Bean Trees, you can see how with each person telling each story has a journey. That journey could include giving birth to a new born baby, or even pushing a car to make it start. For example, Missy's car wouldn't go. It wouldn't even budge unless you pushed it, or if you turned it on while it was sitting on a hill. Even though Missy would have hard times with it every day, it didn't stop her from trying.

This theme can also mean that you never stop trying with what you do. Just as I said before, Missy had a hard time with her car, although she kept pushing it forward hoping that it would never stop.  From that, the author of this book made it into the theme Journey of a Hero because she wanted people to read how it discovers the nature of the world. You can always keep trying so that you could be a hero to your own story, and that would soon make your own journey.

  1. In response to "The Cycle of Life", I first of all am very proud of your personal goal to tell an honest, sincere response to the literature. At the same time, there are some things going on here structurally that should be examined.
I am not convinced this fictional narrative is working for this composition. There is a mature content here and that may require a more sophisticated introduction style. Perhaps an intellectual voice would be more appropriate. If you want to work on this together in the next group meeting, it would be my pleasure.
Next, there is no conclusion currently. Whenever we write, regardless the purpose or length, we need to have an intro, body and conclusion. Beside that, there are some grammatical errors here I would like to show you so that you can work on learning those specific language usage skills.
Organizationally, there is a very col thesis somewhere, but it isn't really examined, or developed. Again, I believe this may be well addressed when we work in the small group.

  2. In response to the November 1 and October 30 responses, there is a level of response here which I believe it is appropriate to abandon. A response to literature should always reflect the level of understanding of the literature you have read. If you remain at the level of summarizing, then there is an issue. You definitely should be doing more with the novel than re-telling sections. Let's work an the development of a proper thesis, and how to respond appropriately.
